1 tablespoon Dark Asian sesame oil
1 tablespoon Peanut oil
1/2 cup minced Onion
1 teaspoon minced Garlic
1 teaspoon minced fresh Ginger
1/4 Cinnamon stick
1/2 whole Atar anise
1/4 cup freshly squeezed Lime juice
2 tablespoons Soy sauce
1/2 cup Plum sauce
1/2 teaspoon crushed Red Peppers
1/4 cup Water
1 teaspoon Dry mustard
2 teaspoons Kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
One 31⁄2- to 4- pound Chicken cut into 8 pieces

    This is a simple and easy recipe for an authentic Asian grilled chicken. The marinade is easy to prepare and could be ready in less than 10 minutes. Enjoy the combination of soy sauce, minced garlic, lemon juice, ginger, Chinese spice powder, and dark Asian sesame oil.

    Place a small saucepan over medium-high heat and add the sesame and peanut oils. Once the oil is hot, add the onion, cook for 3 to 4 minutes, and stir until soft and slightly translucent.

    Add the garlic, ginger, cinnamon stick, and star anise, then add the lime juice and soy sauce while deglazing the pan.

    Add the plum sauce, crushed red pepper, water, and mustard.

    Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes.

    Remove the sauce and discard the cinnamon stick, and star anise.

    Combine the kosher salt and the five-spice powder in a small bowl and stir to mix well.

    Season the chicken with the mixture, then set it aside for 20 minutes.

    Preheat the oven to 400˚F and preheat a grill to medium. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil.

    Cook the chicken pieces for 4 minutes and rotate them 45 degrees. Turn the chicken over and cook for 4 minutes. Keep rotating until all sides are well cooked.

    Transfer the chicken to a baking sheet, brush it with the barbecue sauce, and then place the baking sheet in the oven.

    Cook for 10 minutes until the chicken is just cooked through and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the deepest part of the thigh registers 165°F.

    Remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
