Orange juice is a liquid extracted from the fruit named orange after squeezing it. It can come in many colors that vary from shades of orange to red, depending on the orange’s pigmentation. The taste, as well, ranges from extremely tangy to sweet or mild. It can be served with the pulp of the fruit or without it. Orange juice is classified as the 8th healthiest juice after cranberry, apple, and pomegranate juice, among others; when freshly squeezed and without supplements or additives, it can be good for the skin, heart, and kidneys. One glass of orange juice contains twice the daily amount of vitamin C that the body needs, which helps fight the common cold and strengthen the immune system. But according to some studies, orange juice is as rich in sugar as a typical soft drink, so it has to be consumed moderately. Orange juice is highly acidic, making it a great meat tenderizer that can be used as a sweet and sour marinade for beef, chicken and pork, but in moderation, as too much can toughen the meat. In the US, ‘orange juice’ is usually abbreviated and replaced with ‘OJ.’ It can be sold in a can, a carton, or a bottle. But if made at home, it is usually put in a plastic or a glass container. Either type has to be refrigerated for longer shelf life. Fresh orange juice can last 2 to 3 days if not exposed to temperature fluctuation that can occur if stored in the fridge’s door, for instance. Bottled orange juice only needs to be at the same temperature it was in at the store and put into the refrigerator after opening.
