Button Top Mushrooms or button mushrooms are edible fungi that typically grow in Europe and the United States but became the most widely cultivated mushrooms in the world over the years.

They are characterized by a distinct appearance, a small size, a bright white color, and a mild flavor that intensifies and becomes earthy with preparation and a crunchy texture that turns tender after cooking.

Button top mushrooms can be sold fresh or canned in grocery stores and be eaten raw or cooked in various ways, among which sautéing and grilling are the most popular.

Button top mushrooms, whether chopped or in their original form, can be put in a salad, tossed in a soup, used to make sauces such as oyster sauce, gravies such as tomato gravy, stews such as beef stew, or curry. They can be marinated, braised, boiled, stuffed, roasted, or sautéed, and cooked with chicken, ham, fish, veal, bacon, eggs, and other vegetables, usually seasoned with garlic and herbs.

Button top mushrooms have an estimated shelf life of 12 days. To keep them fresh and in their best shape, they have to be put in a brown paper bag with the top tightly folded, then stored in the fridge.
